Kendal is a beautiful town filled with history and culture and provides a great town to visit while enjoying a break with Mill House Cottages. So, if you’re not familiar with this lovely town, why not get to know it before you visit so you can take full advantage of everything it has to offer?
The History of Kendal
This town has a rich history that dates back to the Roman empire. A Roman fort was built about 2 miles south of the town centre in AD 90. The town is listed in the 11th-century Domesday book as Cherchebi, and not long after this, construction on the early castle now known as Kendal Castle began.
The town was important in terms of its location in relation to Scotland, providing a tactical place from which to defend England. However, this also made the people of Kendal particularly vulnerable to attacks from the marauding Scots!

Today, this marvellous destination provides an excellent location from which to discover some of the most beautiful areas of the country – The Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. In fact, Kendal is known as ‘The Gateway to The Lakes’.
With a thriving town, there is plenty going on in it for all ages, meaning that it has become a popular part of the tourist industry in the surrounding area.
Notable Residents
Kendal has been home to many famous faces over the years, including everyone from David Starkey to Alfred Wainwright. These days, the most famous resident of the town is probably the leader of the Liberal Democrats, Tim Farron.
Things to Do
If you’re a history buff, you will love visiting this town. With everything from castles to museums, this town is full of historic things to see and do.
There are only ruins left of Kendal Castle which sits just outside the town centre, but it is fascinating to explore the site from which the town was once defended.
You can find out more about the story of Kendal Castle and other historical elements of the town at Kendal Museum which is located particularly close to the train station. The museum features the Kendal and Westmorland Gallery as well as the World Wildlife Gallery, so will keep you and the family entertained for the day.
The town can also provide a great day out for avid shoppers who will be able to find a huge variety of shops within the town.

The Lake District truly has something for everyone! There are so many things to see and do, such as enjoying some of the most romantic places you can visit in the UK with your partner to visiting The World of Beatrix Potter or partaking in water activities. Enjoying the Lake District also means, of course, exploring the dramatic beauty all around you, especially in spring and summer!
After all, the flowers will be in bloom, the trees and the plants will be a vibrant green, and the wildlife will be out in force. Take a look at some of the prettiest locations in the Lakes to visit this season:
Grasmere
One of the most picturesque towns in the Lakes, Grasmere is a one-of-a-kind place you should definitely visit! Grasmere is located at the food of striking fells, which provide spectacular views and truly breathtaking photo opportunities; the town also has its own lake where you can hire colourful wooden rowboats, and many quaint shops and pubs, where you can purchase the famous Grasmere Gingerbread.
You can also visit Wordsworth’s grave in the churchyard and the poet’s home, Dove Cottage. With such enchanting landscapes, extraordinary views and natural beauty, Grasmere should not be missed by anyone visiting the Lakes!

Another place that is fantastic for photography is Castlerigg Stone Circle. This is one of the most beautiful locations in the Lake District, as well as one of the oldest circles in the UK – the 38 stones of the circle were put up around 3000 BC by Neolithic inhabitants, making this a great place for history buffs as well!
Castlerigg Stone Circle is set against the striking background of Helvellyn and High Seat, so you can stop for a while and relax while breathing in the beauty, culture and history of the area.

While not everyone will want to climb it, since it stands at 978m, no one will be able to deny its dramatic beauty when they visit the Lakes. This is the highest peak in England, and only experienced hikers tend to climb it. Should you choose to do so, you’ll be treated with panoramic views of the Lake District, as well as of Scotland, Wales, the Isle of Man and Ireland, if the day is clear enough!
The quickest route to the summit will take around two to three hours, but reaching it will certainly be worth all the hard work.
The Lakes are one of the most diverse and spectacular places in the UK, so it’s not surprising that many people choose to visit it at all times of the year! However, during spring and summer, you’ll see a different side to them and will be able to admire the colourful beauty that these seasons bring.
