When celebrating in luxury holiday cottages in the Lake District, you will be looking to explore all the fantastic opportunities that the Lakes has to offer you. Staying in the Lake District over Christmas is an exclusive experience that you won’t want to miss, including Santas, markets and fairs galore. Here’s a look at what’s going on in the Lakes this holidays and where, so you can plan the perfect Christmas in Cumbria with us.
All Aboard the Santa Express
Better than the standard Santa’s grotto, you can take your children on the Santa Express via the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway. This is a special occasion that will keep the spirit of Santa firmly alive for another year. Presents will be given to children aged 0-15 years, and a special seasonal drink is available for the adults, making this the perfect experience for young families. This is a 1 ½ hour return journey that will stay with you for life.
The Santa Express runs on Saturdays and Sundays in December, with its final run of the year taking place on Sunday, December 16th.
There are plenty of Christmas markets going on all across the Lake District, and they’re all filled with illumination and cute stalls. If you get travel sick and aren’t keen on the idea of getting on the Santa Express, you can visit the Windermere Christmas Celebration which has a Santa’s grotto. You’ll be sure to have a white Christmas when you visit Windermere, because they are also hosting snow canons. Alternatively, you could visit Hawkshead which promises children’s rides, and last year featured the ‘Best Xmas Jumper Competition’. The best thing about working Christmas markets into your Christmas activity schedule is that your dogs will be able to explore the market with you. We offer dog-friendly cottages in the Lake District so that you can travel with your entire family.
Here’s a list of some of this year’s local Christmas markets:
- Hawkshead Christmas Fair & Beer Festival (Sat 1st – Sun 2nd Dec 2018)
- Windermere Christmas Market (Sat 8th – Sun 9th Dec 2018)
- Orton Farmers’ Market (Sat 8th Dec 2018)
- Cartmel Christmas Food Market (Fri 21st Dec 2018)
Make the most of these Christmas markets by looking for some famous Cartmel sticky toffee pudding for a special Christmassy sweet or get some proper Lancashire cheese if you and your family want to enjoy a more savoury treat. Christmas is a time for indulgence, so why not get both? We have plenty of Luxury Lake District Cottages, so why not choose your accommodation with us based on the local festivities?
