Location

Kirkby Lonsdale is a 15-minute journey from the Cow Shed. It’s a charming town in the South Lakeland district and there’s plenty to see – you can visit the Devil’s Bridge, Ruskin’s View, or the Highwayman Inn.

  • Ruskin’s View

Ruskin’s View is a short walk from Kirkby Lonsdale, but well worth the journey. From this viewpoint, you can see beautiful landscapes of the Lune valley and Underley Hall. After enjoying the natural beauty of the Yorkshire Dales, you can continue your journey on to the Devil’s Bridge, just a little way down the Radical Steps and along a well-walked footpath.

  • Devil’s Bridge

The Devil’s bridge dates back to the 12th or 13th century and has been closed off from traffic for the enjoyment of the public. It’s now a popular place to enjoy a sweet picnic over the river Lune. It’s also shrouded in a bit of myth, as tales speak of an old woman who lived on the bank of the Lune with her animals. One night, her cow strayed across the river and would not return, so the devil promised to build a bridge in exchange for the soul of the first body to cross it.

The next day, the woman met the devil on the bridge and threw a bun across the bridge which a dog ran to fetch. The devil was enraged from being outsmarted, as he had hoped to gain a human soul in exchange for his hard work but could do no more. To this day, locals claim that a mark in the center of the bridge was left by the devil’s work on the bridge.

  • The Highwayman Inn

Once you’ve successfully completed your walk through Ruskin’s viewpoint and across the Devil’s Bridge, you’ll have to hope that you won’t be stopped by any highwaymen, at least, not before you reach The Highwayman Inn.

Re-opened in 2014 after a full refurbishment, the inn now boasts a relaxing environment which puts hospitality at the top of its virtues. If you’re visiting the Cow Shed in the summer, the al fresco dining opportunities available at The Highwayman may be of interest to you. Alternatively, if you’re visiting in the winter, you can expect their log fires to be crackling away to provide you with the ultimate gastro dining experience.
