Nestled under the Howgills Fells on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District National Parks, the pretty market town of Sedbergh provides the ideal base for a relaxing holiday.  The village is only 30 minutes away from Windermere and lies on The Dales Way and the Cumbria Cycle Route.

The village is dominated by the renowned Sedbergh School which was founded in 1525.  The school excels in sports and the pupils enjoy fantastic opportunities from fell running and ghyll scrambling to playing for the famous rugby team.

The village centre has all amenities including a chemist, butcher, greengrocer, florist , hardware store and old fashioned sweet shop !  The open air market which dates back to the 13th Century, takes place every Wednesday.  More recently, Sedbergh has become known as England’s Book Town and several shops are devoted to rare and antique books. A new gift shop at No 6 is a great place to browse for gifts , home furnishings and jewellery whilst Main Street Gallery has a wonderful collection of prints and original paintings by local and national artists.

The village is also home to The Bath House, makers of natural and organic toiletries, which we supply for the use of guests in all our cottages.

There are many cafes in Sedbergh, but the Three Hares Cafe on Main Street is the newest.  In October 2014, the owners James Ratcliffe and his German born wife, Nina, opened the cafe and small bakery, bringing bread making back into Sedbergh for the first time in years.

The Dalesman Inn offers fine food in a traditional and friendly environment.  As Sedbergh’s only free house, they have a changing range of cask ales in five pumps.  Popular favourites include Timothy Taylor, Old Speckled Hen and Black Sheep.  The food menu changes with the seasons and where possible, the ingredients are sourced locally.

Settlebeck Cottage, our four star Gold cottage is located in a former 18th century workhouse on the outskirts of the village. Sleeping four, this lovingly restored cottage is a perfect base from which to explore this lovely area.  A short walk down the lane lies the river, and the village centre is only a few minutes away.  We recommend Settlebeck Cottage for couples and families with small children.  It really is a lovely place to stay!

If Settlebeck Cottage isn't right for you we have a fantastic selection of holiday cottages in the Yorkshire Dales and nearby Lake District for you to choose from, including larger family cottages, and large group accommodation and romantic holiday cottages for couples.

The attractive market town of Kirkby Lonsdale is a delightful gem and honeypot destination.

Set on the banks of the River Lune, the town’s narrow streets reveal a magical mix of 17th and 18th century buildings, charming shops, and enticing bars and restaurants.   There’s even a micro-brewery.   Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery produces a wide range of craft ales including Single Track, Devils Bridge and Jingling Lane – all local place names.   There are many independent retailers and boutiques in Kirkby Lonsdale and so it has become a real destination for gift and Christmas shopping.

The elevated vantage point over the River Lune offers a stunning opportunity to view the magnificent countryside so admired by Ruskin and immortalised as “Ruskin’s View”.  Spanning the River Lune is Devils Bridge which dates back to the 12th Century and is now a scheduled ancient monument.

There are numerous walks across the fells and Dales of the area whilst golfers will enjoy the courses at Casterton and Kirkby Lonsdale which are popular with locals and visitors alike.

Events in 2015 include:

1st to 3rd May  Kirkby Lonsdale Beer & Music Festival

Kirkby Lonsdale Rugby Club will be hosting live bands all weekend

12 to 14 June   Kirkby Lonsdale Festival of Music

The festival includes a music trail throughout all the local bars in town, showcasing a wide range of music such as folk, blues, and rock
