The Lake District is a beautiful area of Britain and is wildly popular with all different types of holidaymakers - from young families, single couples and older people wanting a few days away. One of the things the Lake District is known for is the abundance of great walking routes, although if you are on holiday with your family, are a bit older and want something less strenuous or just want to have a relaxing time, hiking for hours up fells and steep hills may not be for you.

Have a look at some of our best walks for beginners and those wanting a relaxing time with a little bit of fitness thrown in.

Pooley Bridge to Gale Bay

Pooley Bridge to Gale Bay is a relatively short walk and suitable for all ages and all levels of fitness. It lasts for about one kilometre and is fully paved so those in wheelchairs and with less mobility will be able to enjoy this walk. It is a linear route along the shore of the Ullswater with some spectacular views along the way, and also a resting place, toilets and a café halfway along.

Kentmere

Kentmere walk is a little longer at around 3.75 kilometres. Some of the route is uphill but it’s fully paved and electric wheelchairs and buggies are still able to get up it. Even the steep sections are worth the climb as you will be treated to spectacular mountain views when you reach Kentmere Horseshoe. The fitter and more adventurous can continue climbing once they reach Hartmore Farm, but those less able can go back down the same route with ease.

Blea Tarn

Blea Tarn is the perfect walk if you want something not too strenuous but with a bit of spectacular mountain scenery. It’s around 1.5 km long. This route is usually accessible for everyone but at some time of year water damage can occur and block off paths, so phone the tourist board ahead of travel.

Well known for its peaceful lakes, spiralling fells and dense forests, the Lake District is England’s biggest national park. With peaks stretching as far as the eye can see, it's the perfect destination for outdoor lovers and walking enthusiasts looking to escape for the weekend.

But, with over 200 different fells to choose from, which should you take in your stride? Below are four of the best fell walks in the Lake District…

1. Scafell Pike

At 3,209ft, Scafell Pike is the highest mountain in England and it’s one all keen walkers want to conquer. The long climb to the summit can be draining and timely – the average walker takes six hours to get up and down - but the views are worth the effort. From the top, you’ll be able to see the lush Wasdale valley and beyond. Climbing Scafell Pike is something you’ll remember for the rest of your life - it’s simply breath-taking!

2. Tom Gill to Tarn Hows

Perfect for walkers of all ages, the Tom Gill to Tarn Hows route takes in one of the Lake District’s most iconic tarns. There’s a footpath suitable for wheelchairs and prams, so it’s great for all the family. Those capable of making it up the steep Tom Gill Beck will be rewarded with picturesque views of the glorious Coniston Fells.

3. Blencathra

One of the Lake District’s lesser known hills, Blencathra features a number of routes varying in difficulty. Novices can walk up and around the fell, while more advanced climbers can tackle the ridge at Hall’s Fell. From start to finish, the hike takes in a stunning range of scenery.

4. Skiddaw

Providing amazing views of Keswick, Derwentwater and Borrowdale on a clear day, Skiddaw is one of just six mountains in the Lake District to be at least 3,000ft high. It’s a long but rewarding hike that starts in Keswick and typically takes around five hours.

The Yorkshire Three Peaks is a renowned walk that is perfect for testing the legs and getting you out into the hills for a series of perfect views of the Yorkshire Dales. This walk is not to be taken lightly, but it offers an excellent day out in the Dales before you return to your Luxury Holiday cottages in the Yorkshire Dales. Here we explore all that you need to know about hiking the Yorkshire Three Peaks.

Where Does It Go?

The Yorkshire Three Peaks walk typically starts in Horton-in-Ribblesdale. The walk is traditionally walked in a counter-clockwise direction starting with an ascent of Pen-Y-Ghent. Hikers then drop down and continue at a low level for several miles before passing the iconic Ribblehead viaduct and ascending the highest peak in the Yorkshire Dales, Whernside.

After an ascent of Whernside, the path drops off and crosses some moorland before taking you up to the top of Ingleborough. From Ingleborough, hikers need to retrace their steps slightly before turning off to drop back into Horton-in-Ribblesdale.

How Long Is It and How Long Does It Take?

While there is no official route that you have to follow, the most common and easiest route to walk is approximately 24 miles. The typical target time for the walk is to complete it in less than 12 hours and this is considered to be a fine walking achievement. For runners, the route can be completed in around five-six hours.

Are There Shops and Stops?

The route is relatively barren of supplies with the exception of three locations. Horton-in-Ribblesdale, where you start and finish, is well equipped with shops and pubs, including a cafe by the car park where you can buy tea by the pint when you have finished. There is also a pub approximately halfway through that serves lunch.

This is located at the Ribblehead viaduct and is a good location for a stop, but you should try not to waste too much of your daylight walking hours here. Finally, in the summer there is also an ice cream shed at a farm that can be enjoyed on your walk, but you should not rely on this being open for your walk.

The Yorkshire Three Peaks walk is a fantastic way to spend one of your holiday days before returning to your luxury accommodation, and it can be even better when you book one of our cottages with hot tubs to relax in after your walk.. Contact us today for more details.

The first signs of Spring are a warm welcome, wherever you are in the world. Spring brings with it the emergence of new life, new flowers, new blossoms. The Yorkshire Dales has rightly gained a reputation for fantastic scenery but did you know that there's also plenty here for art lovers too? Make the most of your time in our luxury holiday cottages in Yorkshire Dales with our guide to some of the best art in the local area. We promise you a fabulously cultured escape.

Saltaire

Saltaire was originally a mill town but when the weavers moved out, the artists moved in. The town's original mill now boasts artists' studios and a gallery displaying an ever-rotating collection of works from local and international artists. Pieces by the renowned David Hockney have been displayed here and, for those unable to pick up a multi-million dollar piece of art during their trip, there's the chance to buy some works by up and coming local artists.

The gallery also boasts a café and a fantastic exhibition on the groundbreaking social history of Saltaire. Combined with the fabulous walks and views available in the local area, the town makes for a fabulous day out for all the family.

Wakefield

The town of Wakefield, lying slightly beyond the Dales, may not be your first thought when it comes to an art-inspired day out, but the Hepworth Gallery has been working hard to change that impression since it first opened its doors back in 2011. The gallery regularly hosts touring exhibitions that have sold out in London, Paris and other major cities. Be sure to check out the website before visiting as some of these exhibitions are ticketed and these tickets will often sell out at busy times such as weekends and school holiday periods.

Like Saltaire, there is a significant local aspect to the collection, and much of the art reflects the history and industry of the surrounding towns and villages. Thanks to fast train services, a trip to the gallery can be easily combined with time spent touring the galleries and museums of nearby Leeds.

We hope that our quick guide to the art of the Yorkshire Dales has shown that there is more to the area than simply the scenery, fantastic though it is!

We have a number of options when you are looking for accommodation in the area, if you want to bring your pet along we have dog friendly holiday cottages in the Yorkshire Dales, and we have cottages with hot tubs for the ultimate relaxation after a day enjoying the art available to you.

Keeping the Kids Busy

You could start by visiting Brockhole on Windermere, where there are over 1,500 metres of giant slides, trampolines, tunnels and walkways created out of netting. An exciting detail to mention is that it's all suspended – safely – between trees up to 9 metres from the ground! This memorable attraction is for anyone 3 years and over. There is also bike hire, archery and an adventure playground.

Walking is the best exercise and the carefully-created list of 48 'Miles without Stiles' walks are buggy-friendly, easy routes for all ages, with full details on the Lake District website.

Messing About in Boats

Coniston Boating Centre is the place to go for trying out all kinds of boating options from canoes and dinghies to motorboats. The glass-fronted Bluebird Cafe, named after the record-breaking speedboat piloted by Donald Campbell, offers stunning views across the water.

Rain, Go Away!

...But it doesn't mean you have to stay in, although our TV and WiFi-equipped cottages may tempt you! There is the Ravenglass and Eskdale Steam Railway to climb aboard or you could visit the bustling atmosphere in Kendal plus the Lakeland Indoor Climbing Centre. Just be sure to buy some well-known Kendal Mint Cake for extra energy.

There are art galleries and exhibitions as well as Muncaster Castle, where the Hawk & Owl Centre is based, plus '800 years of history and the odd ghost'. A more newly-created attraction is the 'Brave the Cave' experience where groups can book in advance for an exciting underground adventure, with fun mini-challenges including finding the cave paintings.

Type in any of these attractions and start planning your holiday today. There are enough 'backup plans' should any of the bookings not coincide with the one you'll make with us. Besides, there's always a next time!
